6 Common Myths About Nepal

Myths to Stop Repeating

❌ “Nepal has 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.”

✅ Nepal has 4 inscribed properties: Kathmandu Valley, Lumbini, Sagarmatha National Park and Chitwan National Park. The Kathmandu Valley listing is a single property containing 7 monument zones — which is where the “10” comes from. UNESCO’s own country page for Nepal states 4.

❌ “Everest grows 4 cm every year.”

✅ The uplift is on the order of a few millimetres per year, not centimetres. The 4 cm figure is off by roughly a factor of ten and has no survey behind it.

❌ “Nepal is the second-richest country in the world in water resources.”

✅ There is no credible ranking that says this. It appears to originate from a misread statement about river density. Nepal’s water wealth is genuinely significant — it doesn’t need an invented league table.

❌ “Nepal is a Hindu country.”

✅ Nepal was the world’s only Hindu kingdom until 2008 and is roughly 81% Hindu, but it has been constitutionally secular since the 2007 interim constitution, reaffirmed in 2015.

❌ “The Kumari’s feet never touch the ground.”

✅ The actual restriction is ceremonial and applies when she leaves her residence during public appearances — she is carried or walks on cloth. Inside the Kumari Ghar she lives, plays and studies normally.

❌ “Yetis live in the Himalaya.”

✅ A 2017 genetic study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B analysed nine purported yeti specimens from museums and private collections. Eight turned out to be Himalayan brown bears, Tibetan brown bears or Asian black bears. The ninth was a dog.

❌ “Nepal’s flag is the only non-rectangular national flag” — this one is TRUE.

✅ Keep it. Better still, add the detail nobody includes: the flag’s exact geometry is defined by a step-by-step mathematical construction written into Schedule 1 of Nepal’s constitution. It may be the only national flag whose shape is specified as a compass-and-straightedge procedure.
