At Nepal Facts, we usually write about Nepal's rivers as places to raft, trek beside and photograph. This time we are writing about one of them because of the grief it has brought. The Bhotekoshi flood, which tore down the Bhotekoshi (Bhote Koshi) and Trishuli rivers on 26 August 2026, has become one of the deadliest disasters in Nepal's recent history. Known in Nepali as भोटेकोशी बाढी, it has killed more than 1,300 people, left thousands missing and cut off entire communities in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading.
At about 8:37 a.m. Nepal time on 26 August 2026, a mass of glacier ice and bedrock broke away from the north side of Langtang Lirung, the highest peak of the Langtang Himal, and fell roughly 1,200 metres. The avalanche struck the Lhende Khola near the Nepal-Tibet border and briefly dammed it. When that debris dam failed, a surge of ice, mud, boulders and water raced down the Lhende into the Bhotekoshi, and from there into the Trishuli. Seismometers around the world recorded the collapse. For a few hours, officials in Kathmandu and Beijing believed they were dealing with an earthquake. The US Geological Survey later catalogued the event as a landslide, with a seismic signal equivalent to a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. The flood moved with frightening speed. One independent analysis of the seismic record estimated that the flood front averaged about 193 km/h over its first 22 kilometres. The Trishuli reportedly rose as much as 9 metres in 30 minutes, and Nepal's Flood Forecasting Division recorded the flood above 14 metres in Dhading. people confirmed dead. More than
still missing in Nepal and Tibet. Districts are listed in rough order along the river, from Rasuwa near the collapse to the
Terai plains. The largest counts are furthest downstream, because the current carried many victims far
from where they were swept away. Rasuwa and Nuwakot saw the heaviest destruction and account for most
of the missing. Each point is an official count published that day. Recovery and identification are
still under way, so the line has not levelled off. What caused the Bhotekoshi flood?
